Clerking Full Circle –Reflecting on the way Justices’ past judicial clerkships shaped their work on the Supreme Court
The unique benefits gained from completing an appellate clerkship are widely known. A judicial clerkship is an opportunity to learns from a legal scholar who was an excellent lawyer before becoming a judge or justice. The judicial law clerk also gains insight into the decision-making process, observing what is persuasive or effective. The day-to-day work of a judicial law clerk—tasks such as reading, researching, writing, and assessing or deconstructing arguments—encourages thoughtfulness, reflection, and instills confidence. Less often discussed, however, are the myriad benefits clerking provides when the former clerk becomes a justice themselves. That is the focus of this compelling panel of four justices— Justice Chutich (ret.), Justice Lillehaug (ret.), Justice Procaccini, and Justice Gaïtas. Moderator: Jenna Yauch-Erickson, Assistant State Public Defeder, former Supreme Court Law Clerk
